How to reset the activation key for Windows 2012 R2 server

This weekend while setting up a new Windows Server 2012 R2 server, I ran into a scenario where it was necessary to change the activation key from the original one that was entered. Here is what you need to do to input a new Windows Activation code.

  1. Open the control panel.
  2. Click the System Icon.

As you can see by the picture below, it is telling me Windows is not activated.

3. Click on the Activate Windows link.

4. This is the Activate Windows box. As you can see there is a link to enter a new product key. We are going to click on the Enter key dialog box.

5. You will see this screen come up.

6. Now we will go ahead and enter the new or updated product key.

If everything works like it should, you will get this screen.

That’s all there is to it. Now your key is updated and your server is activated. Have a great day, hope this post helps someone out there. – Thann Massaro, Capitol Computer Service
